Studio Automat in Amsterdam

Tucked away in the heart of sparkling neighbourhood De Pijp, Studio Automat epitomises reinvention. Once an old garage stacked with empty cars and spare wheels. Today the space is a multifunctional studio that’s been re-imagined by Gugi and James van der Velden. The brothers are not only responsible for the stunning rebirth of the place, they’re also the founders of Studio Automat itself.

Whether it’s a corporate dinner or awards night, PR exercise or entertainment launch, Studio Automat has been designed to accommodate functions of all shapes and sizes. This isn’t the first time that one of the Van der Veldens has tackled an overhaul of a garage space. James tackled his first project in 2012, converting a shell of a space into an eclectic home packed with personality.

Studio Automat builds on these original successes, transforming a bare and minimalist space into a hub of creativity. Each and every piece of furniture on show is also for sale, so it’s little surprise that each and every piece is perfectly appointed and beautifully presented to show itself off to its full potential. Not even a plant pot is out of place in this eye-popping space. Furniture and decorations are kept simple with a pared-back aesthetic, providing plenty of warmth and character when the place requires it, but can easily be scaled back and slipped out of view when the situation requires it.
