An ode to modernism by Felipe Hess

Written by Anne-Marie den Hertog in

30-year old Brazilian architect Felipe Hess and his colleague Pia Quagliato have breathed new life into this beautiful, dynamic apartment in São Paulo.

Working without the original floor plan, the architects have remained true to the character and personality of the original property, retaining key features from founding architect Franz Keep’s designs. Parquet floors, original cabinets and doors remain intact, while metal plating and crisp white adorn the walls of the living areas for a pared-back, minimalist aesthetic. The furniture is a combination of Brazilian modernist designs from the fifties, traditional Danish designs and unique vintage finds.

One of the standouts is the kitchen, where the original marble walls and floors have been restored to their former glory, and accented beautifully by the addition two concrete blocks where the sink, oven and an ingenious herb garden have been seamlessly integrated into the design of the space. Concrete has been used to achieve a modern aesthetic in the bathroom, along with a muted colour palate of white and grey. Vistas and unique passageways revolutionize the layout of this property, giving the place a playful twist without detracting from the clean lines and minimalist design.
