When it came to this renovation project, architects Scott & Scott strove to create a sense of synergy between this mountain home and its rural surroundings. Built in the mid-twentieth century, this house stands at the foot of Grouse Mountain, in the forested Canadian wilds just north of Vancouver.
The designers wanted to maintain the original character of the property and its traditional design elements. Using traditional materials like wood and marble, the designers aimed to create an interior that honoured the natural surroundings of the house. The original layout and floor plan was largely retained, although partitions and enclosures were introduced to help section off the living room, kitchen and reception area, in addition to concealed storage space to help minimize clutter and add a practical dimension to the space.
The area around the main staircase was opened up, letting the new stairwell of black steel and authentic pine shine through. The walls of the living space were stripped back and reclaimed, with a natural whitewash giving each surface a new lease of life. New beams and wooden floors were introduced to give the space an instant facelift, while traditional treatments and hard-wearing natural materials were successfully utilized to help maintain a natural aesthetic, allowing for natural wear and tear that’ll only add character over time.
