Garage Loft

Written by Olivia Janssen in

BRICKS Amsterdam converted an old garage in Amsterdam into a beautiful eclectic home. It was completely re-build and furnished with second-hand furniture and beautiful collector’s items. A space that once used to be dark is now blessed with light; a garage normally linked to grease and mess now boasts style and character.

In 2012 James van der Velden, founder of BRICKS Amsterdam, bought an old auto repair shop that was being used as a storeroom. The 135-square-meter garage was a source of inspiration for him and James had clear ideas about how to turn the building into the perfect home. 12 months later the building was transformed into a beautiful loft with a large kitchen and living area, spacious walk-in shower and easy access to the actual garage.

After several years of experience as a designer for prominent designers such as Kelly Hoppen and Piet Boon, James started his own studio in 2010. His style can be described as ‘Timeless Eclectism’ combining classical elements with a broad contemporary approach.
