Creative couple Attilla F. Kovács and Zsuzsa Megyesi of A+Z Design Studio prove that even the most challenging space can be transformed into a home. The HFF knitting factory, a sprawling industrial space in the southern reaches of Hungary, Budapest, served as their blank canvass. Previously a munition factory, making the space liveable and rounding off its sharper edges was always going to be a challenge, but Kovács and Megyesi valiantly rose to the challenge.

Experience in production design and art direction served the couple well, giving the renovated space plenty of theatrical flair. The multi-storey space is broadly divided into four levels. The first now serves as the reception space, with a cool and contemporary colour palate and dynamic centrepieces making a fabulous first impression. The second floor is reserved for bedrooms and dressing space, with a softer colour palate, sumptuous fabrics and warmer touches making the floor a relaxing retreat. The third floor has been transformed into more private living quarters, opting for an open-plan layout that’s incredibly functional, but with plenty of comfortable touches that ensure this former factory space isn’t left feeling sterile. Finally, the penthouse floor offers a touch of real luxury, with an indoor swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre. What’s more, the higher tiers provide access to an outdoor terrace, allowing for a little slice of outside living space with plenty of privacy.
